A case series describes a small group treated similarly, usually without a comparison group, which still leaves open whether the animals would have improved anyway. A controlled trial compares a treated group against a control group under defined conditions, which is what's actually needed to say a treatment has a measurable effect. Veterinary medicine leans on case reports and case series far more than human medicine does, for a straightforward reason: much smaller research budgets and far fewer funded trials. That's a description of the field, not a criticism of any individual study.
Preclinical research is disproportionately done in rodents because it's faster and cheaper than large-animal studies, and a meaningful share of what circulates as "peptide research" for pets is really human or rodent data, reframed for a pet audience without always saying so clearly. Rodent and human data can be a reasonable starting point for forming a hypothesis about a dog, cat, or horse — it is not the same as species-specific evidence, for the same reasons covered on our species pages: dogs, cats, and horses each metabolize and respond to compounds differently.
PubMed indexes veterinary journals and lets you narrow results by species and by publication type (clinical trial, case report, review) using its built-in filters — searching a compound name alongside a species name is a reasonable starting point. CAB Abstracts is a database specifically covering agricultural and veterinary literature and sometimes surfaces studies PubMed's more human-medicine-weighted index misses. Either way, the goal is the same: find the actual publication, not a summary of a summary.
A few patterns are worth treating skeptically: a vague "studies show" with no link or citation at all; content that cites a human clinical trial while discussing pet use without saying the study was in humans; and marketing copy that describes a compound as "well-researched" for animals when the only cited source is a single case report or a rodent study. None of these mean the compound doesn't do anything — they mean the evidence claim being made doesn't match what's actually been shown.
